Elise Mertens beats Coco Gauff and will face Swiatek in Beijing — Interia Sport
In Beijing, China, Belgian tennis player Elise Mertens defeated American Coco Gauff in the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament, 6:3, 6:3. Thanks to this result, Mertens became the opponent of Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals of the competition.
First victory over Gauff
Before the match in Beijing, Gauff had won all five previous head-to-head meetings with Mertens. In the opening set, the Belgian took a 3:1 lead, but the American levelled the score. After that, Mertens broke serve again and closed out the set 6:3.
At the start of the second set, Mertens won six games in a row and took a 3:0 lead. Gauff ended the streak by holding her serve and later reduced the deficit, but was unable to return to the match. The Belgian maintained her advantage and won the set 6:3 for the second time.

Match against Swiatek
Earlier that same day, Swiatek defeated American Iva Jovic, 6:1, 6:3, and reached the quarterfinals. According to Interia Sport, the Polish tennis player leads Mertens 2:0 in their head-to-head meetings. Their match for a place in the semifinals is scheduled for Friday.
The WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing will run until October 11.
