Italy’s U21 national team thrashed their Polish peers 6-2 in Pescara in the decisive Group E match of qualifying for the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. The victory secured first place in the group and direct qualification for the final tournament, which will be held in Albania and Serbia.

As Interia Sport reports, before the final round, the Polish team coached by Jerzy Brzęczek had won nine consecutive matches with an aggregate goal difference of 26:2. A draw or a win was enough for Poland to retain first place, while even a one-goal defeat would have kept them top of the group.

Hosts’ advantage

The Italians opened the scoring in the 16th minute: Luca Koleosho scored after the ball rebounded off Wojciech Mońka. Ten minutes later, Cher Ndour converted an accurate cross to double the hosts’ lead.

In the 54th minute, Ndour capitalized on Mateusz Kowalczyk losing possession in midfield and scored from around 60 metres after noticing that goalkeeper Marcel Lubik had come far off his line. Daniel Mikołajewski and Jakub Żewłakow scored for Poland.

Standings

After the match, Italy and Poland both have 27 points, but the Italian team finished ahead of their opponents on goal difference: 32:7 versus 28:8. Montenegro took third place with 12 points, followed by Sweden with 11, North Macedonia with 7 and Armenia with 1.

Poland have guaranteed their participation in the November play-offs. At the same time, the team can still qualify directly as the best side among those that finished second in the qualifying groups. The results of Germany’s and Greece’s national teams are important for this.
