South Africa expresses interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics — BBC Sport

South Africa has expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympic Games. If the country is awarded the right to host the competition, it will become the first African host of the Summer Olympics, BBC Sport reports, citing the International Olympic Committee.

Seven countries in dialogue with the IOC

According to the IOC, seven countries are in a “continuous dialogue” format with it regarding the 2036 Games. In addition to South Africa, Hungary, India, Qatar and Türkiye have expressed interest and could also host the Summer Olympics for the first time. Germany and South Korea, which have already hosted the Summer Games, are also discussing the possibility of staging the competition with the IOC.

Countries have until October 31 to submit expressions of interest. In November, interested parties will hold virtual presentations for the IOC Future Host Commission. By March 2027, the IOC plans to assess the feasibility of the projects, after which the national Olympic committees will move to the strategic dialogue stage with the organization.

Cities being considered to host the Games

The South African proposal envisages holding the competitions in three cities — Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Durban was due to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games but withdrew from hosting the tournament in 2017.

India is considering Ahmedabad as the host city. In 2030, the city will host the Commonwealth Games and is also bidding to host the 2038 Asian Games. The initiatives of other countries include Budapest, Doha and Istanbul. Germany’s proposal is linked to Munich, while South Korea’s is linked to Seoul and North Jeolla Province.

The 2028 Summer Olympic Games will take place in Los Angeles, while Australia’s Brisbane will host them in 2032.
