Amazon users find personal descriptions in account settings — The Verge

Amazon users have found personal characteristics in their account settings that the service uses for personalization. One Threads user said that, based on her purchases, Amazon had assumed that she had a flat butt. The post went viral and prompted others to check what information the service uses to describe their profiles, The Verge reports.

What descriptions users saw

Other users reported that Amazon considers them people who find it difficult to trust others, or people who find it funny when toys get stuck in classroom ceiling tiles. Other characteristics noticed included a tendency to swear when frightened and an inability to care for living plants.

Some users also saw assumptions that they have no friends or treat cats as biological children. Some of the wording appears overly specific, while other descriptions are general.

Where to check the information

The Verge author noted that her profile included information about maintaining aquarium systems, regular coffee consumption and frequent video gaming. According to her, these characteristics were accurate.

The data can be viewed through the account icon in the upper-right corner of the screen: in the shopping settings section, open the About You item. It displays a list of details Amazon uses to personalize the account; they can be edited or deleted.
