The Air Force needs additional air defense systems to engage targets at altitudes of up to 5 km

Ukraine needs to increase the number of air defense systems capable of destroying aerial targets at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters. It is also necessary to ramp up the production of missiles for air defense systems.

Colonel Yuriy Cherevashenko, deputy commander of the Ukrainian Air Force for air defense, made this statement during a meeting of the Temporary Investigative Commission.

According to him, one of the factors is the altitude at which targets fly. Interceptor drones can currently operate at altitudes of up to approximately 6,000 meters, while other air defense systems also have their own limitations.

Cherevashchenko noted that a target moving from the north or east toward Kyiv must pass through several layers of air defense and a separate layer of interceptor drones.

He emphasized that the denser the air defense system, the higher the probability of destroying the target. Among the systems capable of operating at altitudes up to 5 km, the military official cited the “Osa” systems.

At the same time, the problem lies not only in the number of systems themselves. According to Cherevashchenko, the Air Force also lacks missiles for these systems, so it is necessary to increase their production.

Prior to this, on October 2 and during the night of October 3, the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out strikes against a number of key targets belonging to the Russian occupation forces. Among the targets hit were a storage, training, and launch site for attack drones, a command post, a river crossing, and a repair base.

Starting in the evening of September 29, the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out strikes against key military facilities of the Russian occupiers. Among the targets hit were a drone depot, a command and observation post, and enemy support facilities, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Operators from the 413th SBS “Raid” Regiment struck a Russian BM-27 “Uragan” multiple rocket launcher in the temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The strike was carried out by Ukrainian drone operators.
