Palestinian Health Ministry reports 74,000 deaths in Gaza — Al Jazeera

Over three years of Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, Palestine, at least 74,000 Palestinians have been killed, including no fewer than 21,000 children. This is about 3% of the enclave’s pre-war population, or one person in 30, Al Jazeera reports, citing data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The ministry counts deaths registered in hospitals or officially recorded. The outlet notes that the actual death toll may be higher, as thousands of people may remain under rubble or be considered missing. The number of wounded has exceeded 175,000 — approximately one in 13 Gaza residents.

According to a conservative estimate by the World Health Organization, about 24% of the wounded have life-changing injuries requiring long-term rehabilitation. Children make up one-quarter of this group.

Casualties after the ceasefire

The ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least 1,460 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since then, while another 5,116 have been wounded. An Al Jazeera analysis found that Israel attacked Gaza on 325 of the 361 days after the ceasefire began; only 36 days saw no reports of attacks, deaths, or injuries.

Israel’s operation in Gaza began after an attack by the military wing of Hamas — the Qassam Brigades — and other Palestinian groups on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. At that time, 1,139 people were killed and about 240 people were taken captive.

Medical care, water, and housing

According to an estimate by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 94% of Gaza’s medical facilities are fully or partially non-operational. Only 42 of 666 facilities are functioning. Nearly half of the population has less than six liters of water per day for drinking and cooking, while the minimum for short-term survival is set at 20 liters.

OCHA also estimates that 82% of all structures in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed, and 1.98 million Palestinians, or 90% of the population, have been displaced. About 93% of schools require full reconstruction, leaving more than 700,000 students without access to formal education. At least 63 university buildings have been destroyed.

According to the Shireen Abu Akleh Observatory, nearly 300 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since October 7, including 12 Al Jazeera employees.
