Rubio stated that the West has reached a historic turning point
The Western world finds itself at a historic “turning point” that requires European allies to restore their own sovereignty and strengthen their military capabilities while preserving the transatlantic alliance.
According to Rubio, the U.S. insists that Europe must break free from its security dependence and assume primary responsibility for its own defense. At the same time, he says, this should not weaken the unity of NATO member states.
At the same time, Greek experts and analysts on regional security emphasize the need to maintain a delicate balance in this process: the pursuit of a stronger, autonomous European defense must be unconditionally based on the protection of member states’ territorial integrity and the preservation of the United States’ irreplaceable role as a guarantor of security on the continent.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarked on a working tour of NATO ally countries—Iceland, Greece, and Portugal—where the key topics of discussion were the coordination of defense efforts, the security of the alliance’s northern and southern flanks, as well as energy cooperation.
