Senator Bolsonaro and President Lula advance to runoff in Brazil — NPR

In Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro have advanced to the second round of the presidential election. With more than 98% of ballots counted, Bolsonaro had received more than 47% of the vote, while Lula had 44%, NPR reports. Neither candidate cleared the threshold of more than 50% of valid votes required to win in the first round.

Voting on October 25

The second round is scheduled for October 25. According to the outlet, the candidates who finished in third, fourth and fifth places represent right-wing political forces. This could give Bolsonaro an additional base of support in the next round.

Brazilians also elected state governors as well as legislators to federal and state government bodies. Preliminary results indicate a significant strengthening of right-wing forces in Congress, particularly in the Senate. This could provide Bolsonaro with stronger political backing if he wins the presidential election.

The campaign and key issues

The 80-year-old Lula is seeking to win a fourth, non-consecutive presidential term. He promised to continue large-scale social spending and oppose the tough policies of U.S. President Donald Trump toward Latin America. The 45-year-old Bolsonaro said he intends to reduce the deficit and align the country’s foreign policy with Washington’s course.

Lula accused the United States of attempting to interfere in the election, while the U.S. State Department denied this. During the campaign, Bolsonaro’s supporters used American flags and an inflatable Trump figure, while Lula emphasized protecting Brazil’s sovereignty from external interference. Security, corruption and the economy will also be among the key issues in the second round.
