Krista Pike, who was convicted in the U.S., regained consciousness after a botched execution
In the U.S., Krista Pike, who had been sentenced to death, regained consciousness after a failed attempt to carry out her sentence by lethal injection. The execution took place on September 30 in Tennessee, but after two doses of pentobarbital were administered, the woman remained alive.
Pike’s attorneys plan to file a motion with the court on October 7 to obtain more detailed information about what went wrong during the execution.
Krista Pike, 50, was sentenced to death for the beating and murder of her classmate, Colleen Slammer, in 1995.
On September 30, Tennessee officials attempted to carry out the death sentence by lethal injection. Pike received two doses of pentobarbital but did not die.
According to available information, Pike is believed to be the only person to have survived a lethal injection.
The woman’s attorneys are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, October 7. The preliminary hearing was scheduled by Chancery Court Judge I’Asia Miles in Nashville.
“Contrary to all expectations, Christa Pike is conscious, talking, and continues to receive critical medical care,” reads a statement from Pike’s attorneys.
According to her defense attorneys, the prognosis for Pike’s condition remains unclear, and she may face a lengthy recovery period. The attorneys stated that her hands were burned and covered in blisters following the lethal injection attempt. She is currently in the hospital and, according to her defense attorneys, is shackled to her hospital bed.
Christy Pike’s defense attorneys are seeking a court order that would require the Tennessee Department of Corrections to preserve all materials related to the execution attempt.
This includes, in particular, the lot numbers of the drugs used, the needles, the execution protocols, and other information that could help determine the cause of the procedure’s failure.
Meanwhile, attorneys from the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office stated in a court filing submitted on Tuesday that a separate court order to preserve evidence is not necessary.
According to them, the prison system “is required to preserve this evidence in other cases and must ensure its preservation.”
State officials also stated that authorities had taken the necessary steps to provide medical care to Pike and to determine what had happened.
Republican Governor Bill Lee called the situation “deeply troubling” and ordered a “thorough third-party review to determine exactly what happened.”
In addition, the governor postponed the state’s only other execution scheduled for this year.
Experts on medical procedures and lethal injections suggest that the problem may have been caused by a malfunction or improper placement of the intravenous catheter. As a result, the drug may have accumulated in the tissues rather than entering the bloodstream directly.
Pike’s attorneys noted in court documents that “apparently, no member of the execution team realized that the intravenous catheters had been inserted incorrectly or that the veins had ruptured.”
The attempt to carry out the execution began around 7:30 p.m. local time on September 30. Before the drugs were administered, Pike was given the opportunity to make a final statement.
About five minutes later, Pike raised her head and said her arm hurt.
At one point, she appeared to lose consciousness. However, her breathing could still be heard. At 8:53 p.m., media representatives were escorted out of the witness room.
At 9:14 p.m., an ambulance arrived at the prison, after which Pike was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Currently, the convicted woman’s attorneys are attempting to obtain full information about the course of the procedure and determine the cause of the failed execution.
