Actress Eva Marie Saint died on Tuesday at the age of 102. The cause of death was natural causes: a representative of her family confirmed this to The Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone reports.

Oscar for her first film role

Saint was born on July 4, 1924, in New Jersey. She studied acting in college, worked in television and performed in theater before landing her first film role — in Elia Kazan's 1954 film On the Waterfront. Her co-star in the film was Marlon Brando.

The actress played Edie, the sister of one of the murdered dockworkers. For this role, Saint won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Overall, On the Waterfront received eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Work with Hitchcock and television

One of Saint's best-known roles was Eve in Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 thriller North by Northwest, in which she starred alongside Cary Grant. In 2014, the actress recalled that the director advised her to speak more quietly, avoid using gestures and constantly look Grant in the eyes.

Saint also appeared in films by Otto Preminger, Norman Jewison and John Frankenheimer. She played the mother of Cybill Shepherd's character in the series Moonlighting, and in 1994 she took the stage in a production of Death of a Salesman alongside Judd Hirsch. In addition to the Oscar, the actress received an Emmy for her work in the 1990 NBC miniseries People Like Us.
