Toyota to rent out Sera with gullwing doors — Motor1

Toyota's Kinto mobility division will offer the classic 1990 Toyota Sera coupe for rent at the Shikoku Automobile Museum in Kochi, Japan. The car will be available every Saturday and Sunday from December 5, 2026, to February 28, 2027, Motor1 reports.

A four-hour rental of the Sera will cost 16,000 yen, or about $100. The model will join the Kinto Vintage Club program, under which Toyota rents out restored Japanese cars from previous years.

Coupe with a glass canopy

The Toyota Sera is a compact front-wheel-drive 2+2 liftback coupe that entered the Japanese market in 1990. Its main features were gullwing doors and a large glass canopy. In its original press release, Toyota called the Sera the first Japanese production car with such doors and glass extending to the roof.

The door mechanism was designed so that the force required for opening remained unchanged at different temperatures. Despite its unusual design, the Sera was related to the compact Toyota Starlet and was equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

Weight under one tonne and 108 hp

The version with a four-speed automatic transmission that Toyota will offer for rental weighs 930 kg. The variant with a five-speed manual transmission was even lighter, at 890 kg. The engine produces 108 horsepower and 132 Nm of torque.

The Kinto Vintage Club lineup also includes various generations of the Celica and Supra, the Chaser, Aristo and Altezza sedans, as well as the Land Cruiser 70 Series. The Toyota MR2 is also expected to join the program along with the Sera. Over the entire production period, Toyota built fewer than 16,000 Seras.
