MSF reports new Ebola hotspots in North Kivu — Anadolu Agency

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported a worsening situation with the Ebola outbreak in North Kivu province in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to the organization, new disease hotspots are emerging in the region every week, while capacity for specialized treatment is insufficient.

Growing share of new cases

As Anadolu Agency reports, the situation in North Kivu has sharply worsened since the beginning of September. The province accounts for nearly 40% of all new confirmed Ebola cases in the country, compared with 24% at the end of August.

According to the latest update from the DRC Ministry of Health, 8,554 cases of the disease have been recorded in the country since the outbreak was declared in mid-May, of which 4,114 ended in death.

Shortage of specialized care

MSF noted that North Kivu is shouldering an increasingly large share of the epidemic burden, but access to specialized medical care remains limited. As of September 28, 34% of patients with a confirmed Ebola diagnosis were being treated in non-specialized medical facilities due to a shortage of places in specialized centers and delays in diagnosis.

The latest outbreak has affected seven DRC provinces: Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Bas-Uele, Tshopo, and South Ubangi.
