Svitolina reaches China Open quarterfinals in Beijing — Interia Sport
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina defeated American Ann Li 6:3, 6:2 in the round of 16 at the China Open tournament in Beijing, China, and advanced to the quarterfinals. Following this result, Poland’s Iga Swiatek trails Svitolina by 1,225 points in the season-long WTA Race ranking, Interia Sport reports.

Li took a 2:0 lead at the start of the match. The American later had three break points at 3:4 in the first set, but Svitolina held her serve and won the set 6:3. The set lasted 43 minutes, with the Ukrainian converting her fifth set point.
In the second set, Svitolina took a 4:0 lead. Li won two games in a row and had five opportunities to cut the deficit to 3:4, but the Ukrainian tennis player saw out the match for a 6:2 victory.

Battle for the WTA Finals
Svitolina and Swiatek continue their campaigns in the same half of the draw in Beijing. In the quarterfinals, the Ukrainian will play Zheng Qinwen, while Swiatek will face Belgium’s Elise Mertens. If both players win their matches, they will meet in the semifinals.
The season-long WTA Race ranking takes into account points earned during the current season at WTA 250 tournaments and above. According to the publication, Svitolina, Karolina Muchova, Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk, who missed the tournament in China’s capital due to injury, are competing for two remaining places at the WTA Finals.
