LibreOffice will not add AI to the standard installation — TechCrunch
The non-profit organization The Document Foundation, which develops the open-source office suite LibreOffice, said it will not add artificial intelligence features to the standard software installation in the foreseeable future. The decision was explained by the protection of user data and the desire to preserve the ability to work without a network connection.
Control over data
As TechCrunch reports, The Document Foundation does not reject AI technology in general, but believes that there is currently no integration that meets all of its requirements. The criteria include keeping user data on their device and avoiding dependence on a single AI provider.
The organization stressed that entities working with confidential, personal, or professionally privileged data must know where such information is transferred. In its view, the audit-proof guarantee is that data does not leave the user's device.

The Document Foundation also noted that LibreOffice is used by tens of millions of people and organizations. According to the developers, users should retain control over their data.
Extensions for local models
At the end of August, LibreOffice released a new version that emphasized the absence of generative AI features. The developers called this a deliberate approach: users' documents should not be uploaded to servers for processing, and no part of the suite should require a network connection to function.
At the same time, users can optionally connect AI tools through software extensions that link the editor with local models. The Document Foundation said it would monitor the development of the technology, but until a solution that meets its criteria emerges, there will be no AI in the default LibreOffice installation.
