The Air Force Identified the Main Problem with Shooting Down Russian Drones

The Ukrainian Air Force currently has approximately 75% of its drone pilot positions filled; however, the main bottleneck in air defense today lies in technological solutions, not a shortage of personnel.

Colonel Yuriy Cherevashchenko, Deputy Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force for Air Defense, made this statement during a meeting of the Temporary Investigative Commission. According to him, thanks to efforts to prevent the transfer of pilots to other branches of the Armed Forces, there is currently no widespread understaffing. Once the technological issue is resolved, the next constraints may be scaling up operations and the number of trained pilots.

There are plans to retrain some of the current pilots to operate jet-powered interceptor drones, as well as to draw on a pool of former pilots and other options for increasing personnel that have not been publicly disclosed.

Ukraine is testing two new weapons simultaneously to combat Russian jet drones. These are the Ukrainian-made “Nika” small missile and the SPYS interceptor, which is being developed jointly with Germany. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that tests of the SPYS have already yielded positive results.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and presented him with a list of weapons needed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Among the requests are ammunition for F-16 fighter jets, as well as missiles for the IRIS-T and Patriot air defense systems. The parties also discussed the threat posed by jet drones and ballistic missiles, and how partners can help Ukraine strengthen its air defenses.
