The Army has officially established a Drone Force

The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Ground Forces presented their Drone Forces—an integrated system of units comprising unmanned and robotic systems. However, this is not a separate branch of the military, but rather a system that brings together drone units across various components of the Army.

According to Andriy Ostapenko, head of the Unmanned Systems Directorate of the Army Command, drone units operate within the infantry, artillery, reconnaissance, and support units. They carry out missions during defensive and offensive operations and are also involved in logistics and evacuation.

During the presentation, it was noted that drones account for up to 80% of strikes against enemy personnel and about 70% of all reconnaissance. Unmanned systems also carry out a significant portion of logistical tasks on the front lines and the evacuation of the wounded.

The Army has established a comprehensive structure of drone units: each battalion has a drone company, each brigade has a drone battalion, and each corps has a drone regiment.

The system includes both aerial and ground-based systems. These include FPV drones, heavy bombers, long-range reconnaissance and strike systems, as well as ground robots for assault operations, the delivery of ammunition and food, and the evacuation of the wounded.

According to military officials, drone forces are not intended to replace people on the front lines, but rather to reduce their exposure to the most dangerous areas and expand the capabilities of military units.
