Iranian MPs initiate impeachment of Foreign Minister Araghchi — Euronews
An initiative to impeach Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was registered in Iran’s parliament over his meeting with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. As Euronews reports, the motion was submitted by lawmakers associated with the Paydari Front.
Lawmakers’ accusations
Mohammad Rashidi, a member of the parliament’s presidium, confirmed that the request had been registered in the parliamentary system, but had not yet been referred to the presidium or placed on the agenda.
The initiators of the procedure, led by MP Amirhossein Sabeti, claim that Araghchi’s meeting with Witkoff on September 22 took place without the permission of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and without coordination with the Supreme National Security Council. Among the grounds for impeachment, they also cited crossing “red lines” during negotiations, mistakes in political analysis, and improper handling of the U.S. track.

National Security Council’s position
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, denied claims that the talks were unauthorized. According to him, during his trip to New York, Araghchi was tasked with conveying Iran’s conditions to mediators, which, in Rezaei’s assessment, indicates that the contacts had been approved in advance by the country’s top leadership.
The Qatar-mediated talks concerned the conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi conveyed Tehran’s demands, including the immediate lifting of the U.S. maritime blockade, the transfer of frozen Iranian assets, and an end to the war on all fronts. U.S. President Donald Trump rejected the proposal.
Some lawmakers opposed the impeachment. MP Ruhollah Lak Aliaabadi said that impeaching the foreign minister during wartime does not serve the country’s interests and could be perceived by the adversary as a sign of weakness.
