Qatar says the US and Iran are exchanging messages — Anadolu Agency

Qatar said that the United States and Iran continue to exchange messages, while mediation efforts between the sides have not stopped. Ibrahim Al-Hashimi, director of media and communications at Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, said this at a press conference, Anadolu Agency reports.

Mediation between Washington and Tehran

According to Al-Hashimi, contacts and visits are continuing in order to achieve progress that can be built upon in the future. He noted that negotiated solutions must take into account issues that concern both sides.

Qatar, together with Pakistan, is mediating negotiations between Washington and Tehran on ending the war, which, according to the agency, began in late February. A previous agreement in June failed to stop the hostilities.

Visit by the Iranian minister

The statement came amid a visit to Doha by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Iranian state agency IRNA reported that meetings discussed the situation involving Iranian pilots, as well as regional issues. Momeni said that Iran would send another technical delegation to continue work concerning the pilots.

On August 15, Iran’s General Staff claimed that Qatar was holding three of the four Iranian pilots who were aboard two fighter jets that crashed during the war with the United States and Israel. Qatar denied the claim. Al-Hashimi said Iran had been informed about the latest developments in the case, and Qatar was ready to receive an Iranian delegation to review the measures taken.

Statement on regional security

Qatar also expressed support for regional initiatives to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, including a defense alliance in Mecca between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. Al-Hashimi added that it was currently too early to discuss Qatar’s possible accession to this alliance.
