The new line between Moldova and Romania will be called the Trump Liberty Line

The new line between Moldova and Romania will be called the Trump Liberty Line

The new high-voltage power line connecting the electricity grids of Moldova and Romania will be called the Trump Liberty Line. The project is supported by the U.S. government, which has allocated $130 million for it. The parties have already launched a working group to prepare for construction.

The new Strășeni–Gucinash power line in Moldova and Romania will officially be called the Trump Liberty Line. This was announced by the U.S. Embassy in Moldova.

The Moldovan Ministry of Energy, the power grid operator Moldelectrica, the American company Black & Veatch, and the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau have joined the project. They have already established a working group that will handle further project preparations.

The U.S. Embassy called the launch of the working group an important step for Moldova’s energy future. “This project, supported by $130 million in U.S. government investments, will strengthen Moldova’s energy security and independence, expand opportunities for American companies and technologies across various sectors, and deepen the economic partnership between the U.S. and Moldova,” the U.S. Embassy stated in a press release.

What will the new

Trump Liberty Line will operate at 400 kilovolts. The total length of the line will be approximately 190 kilometers. Approximately 70 kilometers will run through Moldovan territory, and another 120 kilometers will run through Romanian territory. On the Moldovan side, the route will pass through several districts and cross the border with Romania near Leuşeni.

Moldelectrica notes that the project also includes plans to modernize the Strășeni substation. Specifically, two autotransformers are to be installed there, which will allow the 330 kV infrastructure to be connected to the 400 kV grid.

Once construction is complete, this will be the third 400 kV overhead line connecting Moldova with Romania. This will provide the country with another strong link to the European power grid.

Why Does Moldova Need This Line?

The main goal of the project is to make the Moldovan power grid more resilient and reduce its dependence on individual sources and routes of electricity supply. The new line will allow Moldova to increase its capacity to import electricity from the European market via Romania. This is particularly important for a country that has been actively developing energy ties with Europe in recent years.

The U.S. Embassy also expects the project to open up additional opportunities for U.S. companies. This involves not only the construction of the line itself but also the use of American technologies in various areas—from the modernization of power grids to energy storage systems and digital technologies.

The U.S. is investing $130 million

U.S. funding for the project amounts to $130 million. The U.S. government approved the funding earlier, and the project is now moving into a new phase of preparation. In the U.S., this investment is seen as extending beyond the energy sector. The project is intended to strengthen economic ties between Washington and Chisinau and create additional opportunities for American businesses in Moldova.

At the same time, construction of the line itself is not yet complete and is not, in fact, in its final stage. Preparatory work is currently underway, including project evaluation, approvals, and other procedures necessary before major construction work begins.

For Moldova, this project is part of broader efforts to strengthen energy ties with Romania and the European market. The new line is expected to add another route for electricity transmission to the system and strengthen the country’s energy independence. This was reported by the U.S. Embassy in Moldova.
