Russian missiles and drones attacked Kyiv and 12 other regions of Ukraine overnight. At least 12 civilians, including three children, were killed, and more than 40 people were injured, Taipei Times reports, citing Ukrainian officials.

The highest number of casualties in Pryluky

In Pryluky, Chernihiv Oblast, a Russian strike destroyed an apartment building. According to Interior Minister Ihor Vyhivskyi, nine people were killed, including three children, while another 34 people were injured.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also reported fatalities in three other cities, including Kyiv. On the eve of the attack, he said that Ukrainian intelligence had detected Russia's preparations for a massive strike.

In Kremenchuk, Poltava Oblast, two people were killed and another seven were injured, according to regional head Vitalii Diakivnych. A rescue operation was ongoing at the scene.

Statements by the sides

Zelenskyy said that Russia wanted to deliver a painful and demonstrative strike. He called Russian ballistic missiles the greatest challenge for Ukraine's air defense and stressed that air defense packages are vitally necessary for Ukraine, which is seeking missiles for Patriot systems.

Russia is an aggressor state. Its Defense Ministry said it had carried out a massive strike on Ukrainian industrial facilities connected with the production and storage of missiles and drones. The ministry also claimed strikes on port and ship-repair facilities in Odesa Oblast and on vessels transporting cargo for the Ukrainian military.

Zelenskyy also reported Ukrainian strikes on two oil facilities and a training ground in Russia's Perm Krai, Samara Oblast and Astrakhan Oblast. He published images of a fire which, he said, show a burning oil tanker near Sochi in the Black Sea. It was not possible to independently verify these images.
