Ring unveils first smart lock with manual emergency power — TechCrunch

Amazon-owned Ring, which plans to sell the new device in the United States, has unveiled its first smart lock with a manual emergency power mechanism. If the device’s battery runs out, the owner will be able to turn a special knob several times to generate enough power to open the door, TechCrunch reports.

Once inside the home, the battery pack can be removed and charged in the usual way. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff said the idea arose when he was looking for a lock for a vacation home that is used infrequently. He was concerned that the battery could run out and guests or relatives would be unable to get inside.

Ways to open the door

According to Siminoff, a single battery charge should last for about a year. The Ring app will notify the user when charging is needed and will make it possible to set up access for people who need to enter the home periodically, including cleaners or dog walkers.

The lock can also be opened in four ways: using a fingerprint scanner, a backlit touch keypad, the Ring app, or Alexa. The company eventually wants to allow third-party developers to create specialized software for the device, including for Airbnb property owners who need to change access codes regularly.

Sales planned for 2027

The new smart lock can be installed on a standard single-cylinder deadbolt. In the United States, it is planned to be released in the first quarter of 2027 after receiving approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. The device will be offered in black, silver, and brass colors.

At the same time, Ring announced four new 4K cameras: the Outdoor Cam 4K Plus, Spotlight Cam 4K Plus, Floodlight Cam 4K Plus, and the rotating Indoor Cam 4K.
